The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan says in his new report that the situation in Afghanistan under the administration of the Taliban continues to “deteriorate” and women are excluded from society.
Richard Bennett, special rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council for Afghanistan, said today (Thursday, 29 February) at the 55th meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva that discrimination against women by the Taliban group is not only at the Hague Court; Rather, it should be pursued in other courts that deal with the issue of human rights violations.
In his report, Mr. Bennett said that the Taliban started the process of arresting girls and women in Hazara areas of Kabul due to their non-observance of hijab.
He stated that in Afghanistan, this trend has been extended to the Tajik-inhabited parts of the capital, to some provinces such as Bamyan, Baghlan, Balkh, Daikundi and Kunduz.
The special rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council for Afghanistan has asked the countries that the normalization of relations with the Taliban group should be conditional on the respect of human rights by this group.
Mr. Bennett praised the human rights activists in Afghanistan and emphasized that they are fighting for their rights despite being suppressed by the Taliban.
In this meeting, he added: “The deterioration of the human rights situation in Afghanistan over the past two years has caused unacceptable suffering.”
According to Richard Bennett: “Women and girls are excluded from public life and peaceful dissent is not tolerated.”
The special rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council for Afghanistan has called for immediate action by the Taliban group and the international community to stop this issue and give Afghans hope.
He emphasized that the Taliban group prevented his trip to Afghanistan.
Mr. Bennett asked the Taliban group to take human rights seriously and avoid arbitrary executions and whipping.
However, by holding this meeting, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Taliban group, said that the issue of human rights is being “abused” in Afghanistan.
He added: “Richard Bennett and other Westerners should stop abusing the issue of human rights.”
This is despite the fact that international institutions have previously expressed concern about the violation of human rights, especially the rights of women and girls, by the Taliban group in Afghanistan.
