The United Nations Women has said in a report that after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, marriages of girls under the age of 25 have increased by 25%.
Today (Saturday, 25 May), the United Nations Women’s Department wrote in a report that the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan has increased underage marriages by 25% and early childbearing by 45%.
The report of this organization states that the restrictions imposed by the Taliban group have increased the possible mortality of mothers by 50%.
This organization says that it made this report based on an analysis with the help of the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and in this report more than 700 Afghan women were interviewed from 2022 to 2024.
This organization has said that Afghanistan is the only country in the world that, as a policy, prohibits girls above the sixth grade from going to school, and Afghan women are also prohibited from attending university.
According to this joint report, despite the restrictions that exist for Afghan women and girls, they have not stopped fighting to live a full and dignified life.
A part of this report states: “Afghan women are still forming civil society organizations, still running businesses, and still providing services to their communities. “Most importantly, Afghan women have continued to find ways to bring their demands to the international community.”
The report states that Afghan women want the international community to stay focused on the situation in Afghanistan and restore human rights, including women’s rights.
However, Adam Wesorno, director of operations and support at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said that at least 1.4 million women and girls in Afghanistan are deprived of education.
This is despite the fact that schools for girls above the sixth grade were closed from the 24th of Asad in 1400, after the change of political system in Afghanistan, and the universities were also closed for girls at the end of the month of Arc in 1401, and this caused the strong reactions of the international community and It included international institutions.
During this period of three years, a number of international organizations and countries, including the United States of America, demanded the lifting of the ban against women in Afghanistan and announced that if women’s rights are not respected, the Taliban group will not be recognized.
But; In this regard, the Islamic Emirate has always said that the closure of the gates of schools and universities to girls is temporary and will be reopened soon. But three years have passed since these talks and there is still no word about the reopening of schools and universities in Afghanistan.
