United Nations; The decision to close the Al Jazeera network is against the principles of freedom of expression

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has criticized the recent decision of Netanyahu’s cabinet to suspend Al Jazeera’s activity in Israel and expressed his “regret” and demanded its cancellation.

Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights today (Sunda،5 May) criticized the recent decision of Netanyahu’s cabinet to suspend the operation of Al Jazeera network in Israel, saying that this decision is against the principles of freedom of expression, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Mr. Turk added that freedom of expression is one of the basic human rights and the Israeli government should cancel this decision.

He said: “We ask Israel to reconsider its decision to close Al Jazeera’s office.”

On the other hand, the Human Rights Watch condemned this decision of the Israeli government by publishing a statement and considered this decision to impose stricter restrictions on the reports sent from the Gaza Strip.

This international organization has emphasized that free and independent media is essential to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Palestinian Journalist Syndicate also condemned the Israeli government’s decision to close Al Jazeera’s offices in the occupied territories and called for global support for the media.

The statement continued: “The decision to close Al Jazeera’s offices is a sign of the occupation’s intention to continue killing Palestinian people without witnesses or evidence.”

Mr. Palestinian Journalist Syndicate asked the United Nations to intervene to support media institutions in Palestine.

However, last month, Shlomi Kellohi, the Minister of Communications of the Israeli government, led the approval of a bill according to which the Al Jazeera network would be temporarily suspended (45) and, if necessary, the network’s equipment would be confiscated.

But; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that his cabinet has unanimously voted to close the local offices of the Qatar-owned Al Jazeera television network.

The statement said that this could include “closing the channel’s offices in Israel, confiscating broadcasting equipment, preventing the network from broadcasting its reports and blocking its websites, and other measures.”

According to the statement of the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, this decision is to be implemented “immediately”.

On the other hand, the Al Jazeera TV channel, which is based in Qatar, called Esrabil’s action criminal and said that the purpose of this work is to hide the “truths of the war in Gaza”.

Al-Jazeera, while denying the accusation of close relations with Hamas leaders, called Israel’s action a suppression of press freedom.
