Office of the UN Vice-Chancellor: The Taliban must respect international human rights obligations

The office of the United Nations Deputy Mission in Afghanistan and the special human rights rapporteur of this organization condemned the whipping of dozens of people in Sarpol and Ghor provinces by the Taliban.

One day after 63 people were publicly flogged by the Taliban in Sarpol Province, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has condemned this act of the Taliban in a news letter on Wednesday (16th of Jun).

In this newsletter, UNAMA has asked the Taliban to respect international human rights obligations.

On the other hand, Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, condemned the whipping of people by the Taliban in Sarpul province and said that these actions violate Afghanistan’s obligations to prohibit torture and other cruel and inhuman punishment methods.

Mr. Bennett said: “Once again, I publicly condemn the widespread flogging of women, men and children in Sarpol and Ghor on charges of moral crimes (adultery, running away from home, etc.).”

He called for an end to corporal punishment in Afghanistan by the Taliban.

These reactions take place while the Taliban group publicly flogged 63 people, including 14 women, on the charges of “fornication, theft and immoral relations”.

These people were publicly punished by the Taliban in the Sarpol city stadium in the north of the country.

Public punishment and corporal punishment by the Taliban have always been criticized by human rights organizations.
