Richard Bennett called for the support of Afghan women athletes

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan has called for the support of Afghan sportswomen and girls from sports institutions inside and outside the country.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights for Afghanistan, has said that Afghan women and girls have the right to participate in sports.

Mr. Bennett added that Afghan women and girls have the right to participate in sports competitions and he is looking forward to the talented and inspiring women and men of Afghanistan competing in the Olympic and Paralympic competitions in Paris.

He has called for the support of Afghan girls and women athletes from sports institutions inside and outside the country.

In this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, three women have participated in cycling and athletics on behalf of Afghanistan.

Three men have also participated in this competition on behalf of Afghanistan, two of them have joined from abroad.

The spokesperson of the Taliban Olympic Committee told AFP yesterday that it does not recognize the country’s three female athletes as Afghanistan’s representatives at the Paris Olympic Games this month, and only three male athletes are representing Afghanistan.

The International Olympic Committee has invited these six athletes from Afghanistan, in consultation with the former officials of the Afghan Olympic Committee, who are now in exile, to the Paris Olympics.

This is despite the fact that the Taliban have banned women’s sports since retaking Afghanistan, and many female athletes have left the country and are living in exile.
